Little Islands of Peace
Spotted this news article about Russia's tussle with Japan over a group of islands. It traces all the way back to WWII!
I was kinda pissed mad. The last thing I want Japan to do is more whaling. And Russia has so much land! Have they seen the size of Singapore?! We're not talking about precious resources like arable land, minerals or fishing grounds; Singapore dun have enough space to build houses!
Which brings to mind why must every island be claimed?! Can't we just have islands of peace where nations can forget their nationalities and share spaces like human beings? I mean can't UN or some global body establish some sort of peace convention where they agree that selected groups of islands belong to the world, especially the ones that are in dispute. Call it Little Islands of Peace.
Singapore had a fallout with Malaysia over Pedra Branca. And what do they do? They split them up. The former getting the main island, while the latter gets some rocks! Jesus says, "Anyone who has two tunics must share with the one who has none." So clearly, even though Russia has taken possession of the islands in WWII, Japan is a lot smaller in land mass. They should give way. Or let the islands be part of the Little Islands of Peace. Of course, anyone who chooses to live on or visit the island must obey established laws of these countries nearby, who will take turns to patrol the surrounding area.
Then these countries can put this matter behind them and concentrate on other pressing issues like creating jobs and getting kids off the streets and into schools.
If only.
